Doing a rather large design on vinyl. Picked up a piece of marine vinyl to practice on. The design is just an outline, around an inch in width. Probably doing a tatami,, trying to keep stitches minimum as I don't want it to be a cut out...LOL! Should I also use a leather needle and backing? Again, any tips, hints, suggestions would be so appreciated.
I would not use a leather needle. I would use a sharp and no larger than
will work. If you have a sample big enough to try different things, I
would try with and without backing after being sure the needle
penetrations aren't too close. I have always found leather needles cut
too much.

I've done quite a bit of leather and vinyl for car seats, Harley Vests and some fashion leather (which stretches). My strong suggestion is that you use a layer of buckram next to the vinyl along with your backing as it will help give stability to the stitches preventing them from punching through. I would NOT use a leather needle. A leather need actually does puncture the leather and is more for heavier weight leathers. A 70/10 ballpoint or sharp will be just fine. Ease up on the tatami density and no or minimal underlay is best. This idea worked out best with Melco, Tajima Single head and Barudan Multi heads as well
Good luck. I'm sure it will turn out beautifully.
